Schiphol to Amsterdam City Centre: Taxi, Train or Private Chauffeur?
Schiphol to Amsterdam city centre: honest prices and times for the train, bus 397, taxi, Uber and a private chauffeur, and which one suits your trip.

It is 22:50 on a wet Thursday. You have cleared passport control, your bag came off the belt last, and Schiphol Plaza is still busy. Three signs point three ways: trains, taxis, buses. Somebody near the exit asks, a little too warmly, whether you need a taxi.
This guide is about that moment. Each option is a good choice for somebody. The trick is knowing which one is yours tonight.
What's the quickest answer?
If you are travelling light, alone or as a couple, in the daytime, and your hotel is near Amsterdam Centraal, take the train. It is cheap, frequent and fast.
If you have a lot of luggage, children, a late arrival, or a hotel in the canal belt or the Museum Quarter, a taxi from the official rank or a pre-booked car is usually easier. The bus fits in between: good for Museumplein and Leidseplein, less so for Centraal.
Pre-booking a private chauffeur makes most sense when you are a group of four or more, when you want a fixed price before you land, or when you simply do not want to make decisions after a long flight.
How do the options compare on price and time?
Figures below come from official and primary sources checked in October 2026. Fares change, so check the linked pages before you travel.
| Option | Typical cost | Time to the centre | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train to Amsterdam Centraal | €4.90 single (per iamsterdam) | about 17 minutes | Light luggage, daytime, hotels near Centraal |
| Bus 397 (Amsterdam Airport Express) | €6.50 single, no cash | 30–40 minutes, depending on traffic | Museumplein, Leidseplein, Elandsgracht |
| Official taxi from the rank | usually €35–€55, meter can reach about €75 | 20–40 minutes | Late arrivals, door-to-door, up to 4 people |
| Uber or Bolt | varies by demand | 20–40 minutes | Solo travellers comfortable with apps |
| Pre-booked private chauffeur | fixed price agreed in advance | 20–40 minutes | Groups, families, lots of luggage, business |
The train and taxi figures come from the city's own visitor site, iamsterdam, last updated in October 2026. Car journey times depend heavily on the hour. A Sunday morning run is quick. A Friday at five is not.
Is public transport the easiest way in?
The train
Often, yes. Trains leave from the station directly beneath Schiphol Plaza, so you do not even go outside. iamsterdam lists around eight trains an hour to Amsterdam Centraal, taking about 17 minutes.
A few honest caveats:
- Centraal is not the centre of everything. If your hotel is in the Jordaan, De Pijp or near the Rijksmuseum, you will need a tram, a long walk or a taxi from Centraal anyway.
- Night service thins out. After midnight, trains run far less often. Check the NS journey planner before you rely on it.
- Watch your bags. Airport trains are busy, and pickpockets know that travellers are tired and distracted.
- Stairs, lifts and crowds. With two large suitcases and a pushchair, the platform and Centraal's busy hall can be hard work.
For a solo traveller with a backpack at 14:00, none of this matters much. The train wins.
What about the bus?
Bus 397, the Amsterdam Airport Express, leaves from stop B17 outside Schiphol Plaza. iamsterdam lists departures about every 10 minutes, with the N97 night bus running hourly. A single costs €6.50 and you cannot pay in cash.
The bus is handy for Museumplein, the Rijksmuseum area and Leidseplein. But it does not go to Centraal; it ends at Elandsgracht. People miss this and end up dragging suitcases across the canal belt.
How do taxis at Schiphol work, and how do you avoid being overcharged?
Schiphol's advice is simple. Take a taxi only from the official rank in front of Schiphol Plaza. Follow the taxi signs and the floor stickers. Check there is a meter, and pay the meter price at the end. According to Schiphol's taxi page, drivers at the official rank accept contactless and credit cards, may not refuse a ride, and must give you a printed receipt.
Schiphol also adds one line worth remembering: do not use taxis that are offered to you without asking. That friendly person near the exit is exactly who it means. Travellers on Amsterdam forums regularly report metered fares of more than €100 for a trip that should cost about half that. Licensed Dutch taxis carry blue number plates, which is a quick visual check.
Some practical points:
- Size limits. A standard taxi takes four passengers and a few suitcases. For larger groups, Schiphol points to its shared Travel Taxi vans, which take up to eight people but may stop for other passengers.
- Queues. At peak times in summer, the taxi rank can have a line. It moves, but it is another queue after passport control and baggage.
- Fixed-price offers. Some taxi companies advertise maximum fixed fares if you book ahead, which removes the meter worry. Compare what is included.
Are Uber and Bolt a good idea?
They can be. Schiphol gives app rides their own official stop, called the "App pick-up point", and has free Wi-Fi there, which helps if you have no data yet. Follow the signs in the terminal.
The downsides are the usual ones. Prices rise when demand is high, drivers sometimes cancel, and there is nobody waiting for you if your flight is late. For a solo traveller in daylight, it is often fine.
When is a private chauffeur worth it?
A pre-booked car costs more than the train. It is not trying to compete with a €5 ticket. It earns its money in specific situations:
- You are four or more people. Split across a family or a team, a fixed price for one vehicle often looks very different. A Mercedes V-Class takes up to seven passengers.
- You have real luggage. Ski bags, golf clubs, three suitcases and a pushchair. Our fleet page lists passenger and bag capacity per vehicle, so you can choose before you book.
- You land late, or early. At 23:30 or 05:45, a person holding your name is worth a lot.
- Your flight might be delayed. With a pre-booked Schiphol airport transfer, the chauffeur tracks the flight, so you do not have to rebook anything.
- You travel with young children. Child seats are available on request at no extra charge. Mention ages when you book.
- You need a fixed number for expenses. The price is agreed in advance. No meter, no surge.
What does a Harchani transfer from Schiphol include?
We do not publish a price list, because the price depends on your destination, the vehicle and the time of day. You request a quote, we send a fixed price, and that is what you pay.
Every Schiphol transfer includes real-time flight tracking, a chauffeur waiting in the arrivals hall with your name, and help with your luggage to the car. The cars are a Mercedes S-Class for up to three passengers and a Mercedes V-Class for up to seven. Larger groups can ask about a minibus.
If you are not sure which option fits your trip, tell us your flight, your group size and your hotel. We will say honestly if the train is the smarter choice. And if a car does make sense, you can request your transfer here.

Can I pay for the Schiphol bus or train with a bank card?
